SEA Wants Casino to Begin $7.5M Payments, Soon

(0 comments) - The Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority and the Rivers Casino have one more week to try to settle a funding dispute before state gaming regulators may jump in and settle it.

The SEA wants the casino, by Oct. 1, to begin making annual payments of $7.5 million for the next 30 years, so money can be paid to the investors who bought the bonds being used to finance construction of the new Penguins arena. Such payments to bondholders are to begin this fall, said SEA lawyer Robert Graci.

However, Rivers Casino officials think their deal with the SEA permits the $7.5 million annual payments to start in 2010 or even 2012, casino lawyer John Donnelly told the Gaming Control Board today.

Penguins sign winger Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year contract

(0 comments) - A Ukrainian assured American-born Penguins coach Dan Bylsma of a wonderful Independence Day weekend. Winger Ruslan Fedotneko agreed to a one-year deal Friday with the Penguins, taking $450,000 less than he earned last season — and turning down more lucrative offers — for a shot to win the Stanley Cup again.

Fedotenko, 30, will earn $1,800,000 next season. He made $2,250,000 last season, which wrapped with his second Cup victory. Bylsma, who increased Fedotenko's responsibilities upon replacing former Penguins coach Michel Therrien on Feb. 15, was quite satisfied with the developments on the third day of the NHL free-agent signing period.

Penguins drop interim tag from Bylsma's title

(0 comments) - PITTSBURGH (AP) -When Dan Bylsma took over as interim coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in mid-February, they were barely over .500 and nearly out of the playoff race.

One remarkable turnaround later, Bylsma earned himself a new contract and the right to drop "interim" from his job title.

The Penguins officially named Bylsma their head coach after his arrival sparked Pittsburgh to an impressive 18-3-4 record over their last 25 regular season games and a first-round playoff series win.

Satan Recalled to Penguins, May Play Vs Montreal

(0 comments) - Veteran winger Miroslav Satan cleared re-entry waivers today and was recalled by the Penguins. He joined the team after its practice at Mellon Arena and is expected to travel with them to Montreal this afternoon.

Interim coach Dan Bylsma has not determined whether Satan will play tomorrow night against the Canadiens in the team's regular-season finale.

Satan, 34, played 10 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League after he was reassigned there March 4 as the Penguins needed to clear room under the salary cap because of trades made that day. He had three goals, nine points with the Baby Penguins.

Before that, he had 17 goals, 36 points in 65 games with the NHL Penguins since signing as a free agent last summer.

Over his NHL career, Satan has 38 points in 56 playoff games.
