Specter still skeptical; Steelers await results

" NFL says tapes reveal nothing new"

Well, after waiting for months, it seems that Matt Walsh and the NFL have come to terms. But, unfortunately, it seems that it would appear that nothing will come of it from the league standpoint.
I guess it's up to Sen. Arlen Specter to have anything happen.
In a previous article, it was stated that not only defensive signals were taped... offensive signals as well. And the team that was the predominant target was the STEELERS. It is said that of these tapes, they are a finished product, with quality editing that shows the signal, then the play. The signal, then the play. This was the year that the Patriots defeated the STEELERS in the AFC Championship game.
It is my personal opinion that if nothing is done, the NFL has lost its integrity.

If Arlen is our best hope...we may just want to keep the loss.

Honestly, though, what can the NFL do except administer some type of fine or insist on firing BeliCheat? I don't think you'd ever see them stripped of a championship...

Yeah the only thing really left to do is to just make an example of those in the Patriots organization, such as Bill Beeeeelichek and possibly fine him some more.

Stripping the Pats of a Championship would really open a whole new can of worms, one that no one wants to really get into (understandably so).

I was somewhat disappointed that the tapes didn't reveal anything else, if nothing more than for the excitement and hullabaloo it would've created. Darn, now ESPN will have to go back to showing more NBA playoffs highlights as the Pens continue to offensively dazzle their NHL opponents...

I agree, i don't see any kind of championship being stripped.... but they could ban Belicheat from the league (see: Pete Rose).
That would make a statement ... make an example for others .. that's all I was looking for. You can never get a game back... but you could at least show that the integrity of the league is to be taken seriously.

I would love to watch an NFL season without seeing his face again, but I doubt it will happen.

The MLB gets a decent amount of bad press for kicking out Pete Rose. I wouldn't expect the NFL to put themselves through the same controversy. Besides, imagine the outrage they'd get from all those who think this guy's a god.

Look for a hefty fine, and - if you really want an early Christmas present - a suspension for a couple games.

And as a follow up on this story:

Specter wants Mitchell-like investigation

WASHINGTON (AP)—Sen. Arlen Specter wants an independent investigation of the Patriots’ taping of opposing coaches’ signals similar to the Mitchell Report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball.

Specter again criticized the league’s handling of the investigation and threatened the possibility of revoking the NFL’s antitrust exemption during a news conference Wednesday. The senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee met with former New England video assistant Matt Walsh a day earlier.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell indicated he considered the investigation over after meeting with Walsh on Tuesday.

“Everybody pooh-poohs it,” Specter said. “It’s ridiculous to make that kind of contention.”

Specter, from Pennsylvania, cited the fact a Patriots attorney sat in on Walsh’s meeting with Goodell as proof the investigation has not been impartial.

He repeated his disapproval of Goodell’s decision to destroy the notes and tapes confiscated during the initial investigation last fall.

“That sequence is incomprehensible,” Specter said. “It’s an insult to the intelligence of the people who follow it.”

If the NFL condones cheating, Specter said, it encourages others to cheat.

“They owe the public a lot more candor and a lot more credibility,” he said.

"Everybody pooh-poohs it"???

What the $#@! does that mean?

Really, though, what is there to investigate? They already have the tapes and someone who confessed to the wrongdoing. This would be the easiest investigation known to man.

Are they thinking that other teams engaged in this type of behavior as well?

I was wondering the same thing, actually. It seemed at the surface to me to just be Specter's attempt to make himself famous on a Mitchell-like level, but really what is there to look for?

I don't know. I'm definitely not a Pats fan so I don't care if they get hurt for whatever it is that they did, but I'm not sure there's much more that can be done.

And since when has having a party's lawyer sit in on a talk tip the scales of being biased? I'm just a bit perplexed regarding Specter's comments.

That means that so far everyone is saying that the cheating is no big deal, that it's nothing to be concerned about.

The NFL might reconsider that opinion when they are facing violation of anti-trust laws.

Never heard that phrase before. I always thought the only thing you could pooh-pooh was your pants.

Well, it's an old saying, and ya gotta remember that Specter is a pretty old guy.
