Of all the people in the Penguins' quiet, sad locker room late last night, one was smiling. At least briefly.
That's because, in the aftermath of a missed chance at the Stanley Cup, Mario Lemieux saw a bigger picture than the 3-2 loss to Detroit that gave the Red Wings the Stanley Cup.
"We've come a long way in a short period of time. It's going to be a great team for many years to come. We've made some sacrifices in the last six, seven years with this franchise, but with the picks that we got and, of course, getting Sidney [Crosby] in the [2005 draft] lottery, it certainly turned this franchise around," said Lemieux, now the owner but then the star of the Penguins' 1991 and '92 Stanley Cup teams."

A nice read after such a disappointment for all of us Pens fans. To our anonymous Wings fan - touche, you were in fact right.
To the Red Wings - congratulations. The one thing about the Stanley Cup is that once it is awarded, there is rarely anything you can say that can discount their deserving of that trophy. A great team with a lot of talent, and hey, they won it without Yzerman. I'd say that's a feat in and of itself.
To the Penguins - a great run that you should not be ashamed of. A lot of analysts predicted that whatever team would emerge from the East just couldn't compete with the winner of the West, and I think you guys put up a hell of a lot better fight than many expected you would. This is just another step in the right direction for the organization. I just hope we use this experience in the right way. Let the loss sink in, burn a little bit. Let yourself remember it for next season. Motivation. All the way. Motivation.
Thoughts, observations on the whole series? With the Cup awarded, I guess we can now really start talking about free agency and contract talks. Goodbye Mr. Hossa?

Yes, it was a good run for the Pens. They got further than alot of people thought they would. A lot of woulda /coulda/shoulda ... but that changes nothing.
I feel that free agency might be a bad thing for our Penguins...
too many to be able to sign them all. And yea, I agree, Good Bye Mr. Hosa .. and THANKS, you did a terrific job for us! And we are glad that you got that playoff monkey off your back. Good Luck tyo you, where ever you end up at next season.
